![]() All principals in high and secondary schools in the Eastern Highlands Province are advised not to turn students away when they go to register. Eastern Highlands Governor Peter Numu said this is because the provincial government has declared free education for students doing grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. He said those who have already paid must go and get a refund or else leave it in the accounts for next year because the provincial government will cover fees for all high and secondary school students this year. “We made the announcement already on free education for high and secondary school students in the province so no one should be paying,” Mr Numu said. “Principals must adhere to this directive from the government, and if principals are charging students then I will make it my business to visit those schools that are charging students and parents.”
Mr Numu said the provincial government will utilise K7 million from the provincial internal revenue generated to cover the cost of free education for grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 students attending government-run high and secondary schools. He said the K7 million for free education is from a K30 plus million internal revenue generated by the province. He said the free education policy for high and secondary schools can follow through next year as well depending on the internal revenue generated this year (2021). As for tertiary students, Mr Numu said they will have to apply for the HELP loan and the provincial government can only help to repay the loan if they return back into the province and work. He said those tertiary students that complete their studies and work in other provinces will not receive any assistance from the provincial government in terms of repaying the HELP loan.
