A team from the Education Department visited the Sir Pita Lus School of Excellence last Thursday for an inspection as part of a project in East Sepik’s Maprik district. Local MP Libert Kapris stated that the purpose of the visit was to assess the scope of work required and to provide a design and cost estimate for submission to the National Executive Council (NEC) for funding to be included in next year’s budget. “One of People First Party’s key policies is quality education, and during our election campaign, we committed to honoring Sir Pita Lus, a prominent MP who represented Maprik for three decades following political independence,” Kapris said. “He deserves recognition, which is well and truly overdue.” This visit followed a call last month by Kapris and Minister for International Trade and Investment Richard Maru to Prime Minister James Marape and the Pangu Party to establish a special memorial for the late Sir Pita in the form of the Sir Pita Lus School of Excellence in his home district of Maprik.
Kapris emphasized that other founding fathers have been recognized, and Sir Pita Lus also deserves such an honor. “We will achieve this by building a school of excellence in his honor in his home district, serving as a perpetual reminder of the great leader that we produced in the pre-independence era,” he said. Kapris also noted that the day after his swearing-in, he met with Dr. Uke Kombra, the Secretary for the Department of Education, to discuss the project and arrange for a technical team to visit the site. Kapris expressed his gratitude to the Education Department, Dr. Kombra, and the Prime Minister for their support in recognizing Sir Pita, who was a founding member of the pre-independence Pangu Party, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. “I want to assure the people of Maprik that I will give this project my highest priority and see it done,” he said.
