MENDI-Munihu in Southern Highlands has spent more than K5 million this year on education, says local MP Raphael Tonpi. The Mendi-Minihu development authority (DDA) under MP Tonpi’s leadership, is focused on developing and upgrading existing infrastructure which had been lacking in the district. “We are focused on prioritising education,” he said. Tonpi said DDA with the theme: to revive, restore and make it functional, had outlined a number of projects focusing on education. As part of the projects, the DDA bought three trucks for the district education adviser and two school inspectors to visit schools at a cost of K300,000. He said more than 33 primary schools received direct funding from of K50,000 each.
Sumbra and Karinz High Schools got K200,000 each while Mendi Day Secondary received K500,000 and Mogol Secondary received K250,000. Mendi Tvet, Bela Tvet and Kumin Special Education got K100,000 each and K50,000. Tonpi said being an educationist, his aim was to phase out Grade eEght exams in 2025 and Grade 10 exams in 2027 to meet the United Nations requirements by having every student passing Grade 12.
