![]() PNG's KEREMA Open MP Thomas Opa paid a total of K220,000 as semester one tuition fees for more than 80 students attending the International Training Institution (ITI) on Friday. The money was presented by members of the Kerema Hope Foundation to the ITI board of management at the Badili campus in Port Moresby. Opa, who is also the vice-minister for Mining, said the support was part of a K1 million funding project under the tertiary assistance scheme and the district office had budgeted for all Kerema students in tertiary institutions. He said the district hoped to have more than 2,000 young men and women who had tertiary level qualifications and were contributing to the district in five years’ time.
“Our vision is to create an educated and informed Kerema district,” he said. “So we want about 2,000 young people to graduate every five years. This will include about 400 teachers from teachers colleges around the country, 200 doctors from medical faculties. “Our people have been doing it tough given the lack of economic opportunities. “That is why we are now shifting our focus to developing the human resource of the district. “The more educated young people we have and continue to build human resources, the more it will create synergies and an ecosystem of a thriving district economy.” The sponsorship of the 88 students attending ITI in Port Moresby was presented through the Kerema Hope Foundation, which is an association that links up students at various institutions throughout the nation with the district office for them to access their funds. Foundation chairman Samuel Kairi said the district had potential in natural resources but they needed to first focus on investing in young people so that they could become self-reliant, independent and successful.
