AN elementary school teacher in a remote village in Vanimo, West Sepik, Papua New Guinea has been working without pay for 13 years. Mahney Elementary School teacher Longaar Noukwon said he had been teaching since 2010, sacrificed and went through hardships because he was committed to the profession he was trained for. “I have sacrificed and taught since 2010 without pay, I’ve gone to the provincial education office for help but nothing has been done since then,” he said “I face difficulties trying to sustain myself as most of my time is spent in the classroom teaching, doing lesson plans and I have no time to do other things to help myself.” Noukwon said his family had suffered in order for him to pursue a career in teaching.
He said Mahney Elementary School had three teachers but only one had a registered position and was on a salary while him and his other colleague had no teaching file numbers and positions and despite acquiring positions from Sumomini Elementary School, were still to be paid. He said the school was registered and had been established almost 30 years ago with three classes and around 50 students in each class. Noukwon called on education authorities to create positions in Mahney so they could get what was due to them for serving the school and community. “We are the ones that build students up from their first days in school and we deserve to be treated like other teachers,” he said. “Child education is very important and so is teacher welfare so we can teach the students well.” The Teaching Service Commission and the provincial education adviser could not be reached for comments.
