![]() NO stakeholders, staff and teachers should be involved in the selection of students for the University of Goroka (UOG), says an official. Vice-Chancellor Dr Teng Waninga said six officers had been terminated for doing so last year and he would not hesitate to do that again if a similar situation was detected. Waninga said the university had a very important responsibility to educate students to be teachers and such acts would not be entertained. He said students were only selected on merit by meeting the grade point average (GPA) of the programme. “Our aim and the aim of the council is to produce quality teachers to bring quality into the schools they go out to,” he said.
Waninga said the university was established to train teachers and their performance would determine the performance of students entering other universities after Grade 12. He said every year, they enrolled 1,500 students and this year, they had already registered more than 700-800 students, and the registration was ongoing. He said the university had major challenge with student’s dormitory spaces after a dormitory was damaged by the 7.6 magnitude earthquake last year. “The Government has approved K10 million to build temporary accommodation and as soon as the funds are released, we will build temporary accommodation,” he said. Waninga said they had given priority to scholarship students and those sponsored by international organisations. He said UOG had established centres in 18 provinces except Gulf, Western, Manus and East New Britain and plans were underway to establish centres in these provinces this year. The university also trained teachers from the Pacific. Waninga said: “Last year, we graduated 38 teachers in our sixth graduation in Honiara (the Solomon Islands) and also graduated 28 teachers in Port Vila (Vanuatu), our Pacific expansion plan is to train teachers in our neighbouring countries.” The National / PNG education news Next :
