In a fervent plea, James Litai, Enga Provincial Examination Supervisors, voiced opposition against the proposed removal of Accounting and Legal Studies from Papua New Guinea's (PNG) educational framework under the Standards Based Curriculum (SBC). Bachelor's degree programs worldwide recognize Accounting and Legal Studies as indispensable subjects, forming the backbone of rigorous academic pursuits. Litai emphasized the global significance and longstanding tradition of these courses, questioning the rationale behind their elimination. Under the SBC, initiated in 2023 at Grade nine level, the curriculum is set to evolve, with Grade 10 students becoming pioneers of its examination system. While STEM subjects are integral to the framework, concerns arise regarding the relegation of humanities courses.
The decision to replace Legal Studies with subjects like Political Science and Environmental Science at the secondary level drew criticism from Litai. He argued that such alterations lack relevance to PNG's context, citing the omission of crucial topics like the country's governmental structure. Environmental Science's redundancy was also highlighted, with Litai asserting that Geography adequately covers related themes. Additionally, the elimination of Accounting from the Business and Technology pathway was deemed imprudent, given its distinctiveness from Business Studies. Litai called for an urgent review of the SBC by the Secretary for Education, cautioning against the removal of foundational subjects like Accounting and Legal Studies. Amidst mounting concerns from stakeholders, the plea underscores the need for comprehensive deliberation before implementing educational reforms. The fate of these essential subjects hangs in the balance, as educators and stakeholders advocate for a curriculum that upholds academic rigor and relevance to PNG's socio-economic landscape.
