A LECTURER at the University of Goroka appeared in the Goroka District Court yesterday charged with assaulting a Catholic priest. He pleaded guilty in his first hearing but raised some defence which prompted the court to adjourn the matter to tomorrow. Anton Simbai, 32, from Rindima village in Daulo district, allegedly assaulted Fr Paul Liwun, from Indonesia, at the Kefamo Catholic Mission premises on Oct 26. THREE female teachers of a high school in Jiwaka province have been suspended after one of them posted on social media a picture of them consuming alcohol in the staffroom, says an official. Jiwaka education advisor Dr Charly Muke told The National that it was wrong for teachers to consume alcohol inside the school premises. Dr Muke said the teachers posted the picture during the World Teachers’ Day celebration at the school, but the post went viral recently on Facebook. TEACHERS around the country will not strike or protest like the nurses’ union, an official says. Papua New Guinea Teachers Association general secretary David Numbaming said while teachers were considered among the frontline workers during the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, they would not be involved in union action as the school year was almost over and students needed to complete their activities, including tests, examinations and assessments. Papua New Guinea’s first woman university vice-chancellor Dr Cecilia Nembou (pictured above, right) was recognised as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) last month for her services to higher education and as a role model for women. Dr Cecelia, from Baluan Island Manus, retired as the president and vice-chancellor of Divine Word University last year, ending a 45-year career in academic and senior administrative roles in the higher education sector in Papua New Guinea and abroad. The #PNGAusPartnership Secondary School (PASS) Initiative is fostering intercultural understanding, leadership capabilities, and people-to-people links between students across Papua New Guinea and Australia. In 2019, Year 11 student Chiara Maiorino from Haileybury College in Melbourne traveled to Wewak where she met students from Passam National School of Excellence. Impressed with her fellow students' enthusiasm for learning, Chiara said: “It opened my eyes to the reality of their world and really highlighted how privileged we are in Australia." A GRADE nine student at a high school in Morobe appeared in the Lae Committal Court yesterday charged with burning down two dormitories last Thursday.
Magistrate Pious Tapil after reading the arson charge to Sylvester Winuan, 18, from Boikin, Wewak, East Sepik, ordered a warrant of remand for him at Buimo jail and gave police three months to complete their investigations into the matter. According to police report, Winuan and other students were allegedly drunk last Thursday at Salamaua High School in Huon Gulf when he committed the crime at the school. PNG EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro says schools have a special role to promote gender equality and give opportunities to disadvantaged groups to ensure no one is left behind. Speaking at the 41st United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) meeting in France on Monday, he said the Coronavirus (Covid-19) had affected schools in Papua New Guinea and about 2.4 million students had experienced disrupted learning during the country’s lockdown measures to avoid the spread of the virus. Association general secretary David Numbaming said one of their representatives should be present during decisions made by provincial or national education committees regarding teachers’ issues. “It’s mandatory that PNGTA reps be present in any meeting concerning teachers,” he said. The St Mary’s Asitavi Secondary School in Central Bougainville is partnered with St Saviours Girls High School in Queensland through the #PNGAusPartnership Secondary Schools (PASS) initiative. This initiative brings students from Australian and PNG schools together to learn from each other and undertake shared learning activities in STEM, English, leadership and digital skills. Since the beginning of the pandemic face-to-face visits have not been possible however PASS has found many ways to support partner schools in PNG throughout the COVID-19 crisis, through water sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) improvements and through better ICT to continue connecting students. |
