PNG, Australia Partnership in Secondary Schools Fostering people-to-people links between students11/21/2021
![]() The #PNGAusPartnership Secondary School (PASS) Initiative is fostering intercultural understanding, leadership capabilities, and people-to-people links between students across Papua New Guinea and Australia. In 2019, Year 11 student Chiara Maiorino from Haileybury College in Melbourne traveled to Wewak where she met students from Passam National School of Excellence. Impressed with her fellow students' enthusiasm for learning, Chiara said: “It opened my eyes to the reality of their world and really highlighted how privileged we are in Australia." Upon returning home this enterprising student reached out to publishing houses and engaged her community to gather a wide selection of books to gift to the partner school in Wewak.
Early this month more than 1300 fiction, non-fiction and school textbooks were received by excited students and teachers from Passam National School of Excellence. “Knowledge in books takes us to new worlds and different times,” said Roslyn Thomas, a math and science teacher and one of the school’s PASS team members. Roslyn had the opportunity to visit Haileybury in 2019 with four students, the principal and one other teacher. Well done Chiara and both schools – a wonderful #PNGPoros initiative!
