The Gazette, accessible online, details vacant positions by provinces and includes downloadable application forms (TSC Form 28, 29, 30, 31). Mrs. Joyce Tepu, spokesperson for the Education Department, highlighted the importance of timely adherence to the Appointment Schedule. "We urge all authorities to review the Gazette promptly," she emphasized. The Papua New Guinea Teachers Service Commission (TSC) commemorates a significant milestone today as it marks 54 years since its establishment on July 1, 1970. Initially founded as a governmental agency, the TSC has played a pivotal role in overseeing the terms, conditions, and welfare of teachers across the country, alongside other legislated responsibilities within the Ministry of Education.
Since its inception, the TSC has been entrusted with ensuring the effective management of teachers' employment frameworks and safeguarding their welfare. Over the years, it has evolved into a cornerstone institution, pivotal in shaping educational standards and supporting the teaching community nationwide. The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) Chairman, Samson Wangihomie, has called on teachers to return to their classrooms as the third term of the school year begins today.
"The Census ends on June 30, and teachers must return to teaching," Wangihomie stated. He explained that while the TSC had released teachers for national duties under the Teaching Service Act, those required to remain by the National Statistics Office (NSO) should inform their TSC advisers and respective provincial education divisions. Teachers across Papua New Guinea are set to receive a long-anticipated three percent pay raise starting July 10, according to the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) Chairman, Samson Wangihomie. This pay increase is part of a broader package of allowances outlined in the new Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for 2023-2025, signed in December between the PNG Teachers Association (PNGTA) and the TSC. This agreement updates and replaces the previous 2017-2019 MoA.
Wangihomie explained the delay in implementing the pay rise, noting that the 2024 National Budget had already been passed by the time the new agreement was signed, leaving no allocation for this purpose in the budget. Lae, Morobe Province – The Morobe Education Advisor has announced the establishment of an e-learning sector within the Division of Education. Advisor Tangui revealed that his current priority is to install 50 e-libraries across schools in the ten districts of Morobe Province.
Tangui made this announcement during the official launch of 50 schools by the National Education Minister, Hon. Lucas Dawa Dekena, at Busu Secondary School in Lae. He emphasized that the e-libraries would operate offline, eliminating the need for internet connectivity and data usage, thereby reducing financial burdens on parents. The schooling system in Papua New Guinea has failed many students due to their difficulties in understanding English, according to the founder of a high school in one of the country's remotest regions.
Mongulu Secondary, located in the isolated part of Middle-Fly in Western Province, was established in 2019, initially catering to Grades Nine and 10. The school celebrated its first Grade 10 graduation in 2022. Sally Lloyd, the founder and wife of the school principal, highlighted the challenges faced by students in remote areas. Four primary schools in Sialum, part of Tewae-Siassi in Morobe Province, have been shut down for the 2024 academic year due to ongoing ethnic conflicts, with plans to reopen next year, according to a provincial education official.
Keith Tangui, the Provincial Education Adviser, announced that Nunzen and Gerup primary schools, along with two others, will remain closed for the rest of 2024 as the continuous fighting in Sialum has caused significant disruptions to the students' education. Tangui explained that students would need to repeat their classes next year since the schools had closed at the beginning of the second term. The Secretary for Education, Dr. Uke Kombra, has announced that Term 3 classes for all schools and institutions under the National Education System (NES) will commence on Monday, July 1. Dr. Kombra emphasized the importance of readiness among students and teachers for the upcoming term.
