Wesley Raminai warned today that lawbreakers who entered the University of Goroka campus on Friday 11th June, vandalized properties and disrupted students sitting for their examinations would be dealt with by police. “I condemn the actions of those who unlawfully entered the campus on Friday, broke into offices, and tried to illegally seize control of the administration and cheque-books of the university”, said Minister Raminai. “Students sitting for their examinations in peace and quiet were suddenly disrupted by truckloads of people and their supporters who stormed onto the campus and tried to forcefully and illegally install the old regime”. When I was in UPNG, we stood up for women, defended them and treated them with respect. Today these women call us brother still. You are a good man when you stand up for those who are weaker then you. You are not a good man because you demand it. What we have just witnessed this past week at UPNG shows very weak character and a lack of appreciation for what constitutes acceptable human behavior in our country. ![]() An application filed by the former Interim Council members of the University of Goroka, seeking leave for judicial review of a decision of the Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Wesley Raminai, in appointing new Council Members, has been dismissed by the National Court in Waigani. Minister Raminai in a Gazettal Notice dated April 19th, 2021, revoked the appointment of Professor Joseph Sukwianomb as Chancellor of the Council of UOG and members of the Interim Council that he led. New council members, to be headed by former MVIL Chief Executive Officer, Joe Wemin as Chancellor was then appointed. ![]() Commentary by Albertis_Photograph Majority of the hard working & innocent male students of UPNG were disappointed about the recent protest led by the UPNG female students. This protest has paint a bad picture & spoil the reputation of the male population of UPNG and spoiling the reputation of UPNG as well. ![]() WITH a balance sheet of more than K986 million at the end of 2020), the Teachers Savings and Loan Society (Tisa) hopes to enter the banking sector to provide relief for its members.Tisa chief executive officer Michael Koisen said in Port Moresby yesterday that currently, there was a duopoly in the retail banking sector which was not good for the market.Tisa’s banking licence application was still being processed by regulator Bank of Papua New Guinea.“There are two major banks servicing the retail sector, we have four banks in the country and their focus, a lot of it, is on the corporate sector,” Koisen said.“But the retail sector needs someone else to come in.” ![]() THE Teachers Savings and Loan Society (Tisa) announced yesterday that its 63,000 members have earned a collective 2020 additional bonus interest of more than K24.7 million.Tisa chairman Gabriel Tai with chief executive officer Michael Koisen, said in Port Moresby that this represented seven per cent of the members’ general savings account.The bonus interest is K5,377 more than the 2019 bonus interest which was K24,766,272.The 2018 bonus interest was K19,619,184.Tai said members could immediately access the bonus which was K393 using their Yumi Cards.Members who do not have a Yumi Card are advised to apply for cards at their nearest Tisa branch.About 10 per cent of the members still do not have a Yumi Card. ![]() The Women Doctors Association has taken a no-tolerance approach to gender-based violence and sexual harassment experienced at the University of Papua New Guinea. This follows recent reports circulating on mainstream and social media in relation to sexual harassment incident at the University's Main Waigani Campus. Women Doctors Association President Lynda Sirigoi says the university should be a safe and healthy learning environment for all students regardless of their gender. The Education Department has come down hard on those teachers entering colleges through using fake documents, bribery,low GPA and getting a diploma or certificates. The department has begun deregistration of teachers starting from the elementary in each province. Below is a list of elementary teachers from the Southern Highlands Province that are now deregistered and their provisional certificates withdrawn and they should not be in the classrooms as of the date of release of the termination notice..
![]() FEMALE students of the University of PNG have demanded an end to sexual, verbal and physical harassment on campus. They staged a protest yesterday led by Student Representative Council vice-president Nancy Paglau who called on the university council to address the issue immediately. “We (have) faced this problems (for years) and our voices must be heard this time,” Paglau said. |
