![]() PNG Minister for Sports & Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Hon. Wesley Raminai warned today that lawbreakers who entered the University of Goroka campus on Friday 11th June, vandalized properties and disrupted students sitting for their examinations would be dealt with by police. “I condemn the actions of those who unlawfully entered the campus on Friday, broke into offices, and tried to illegally seize control of the administration and cheque-books of the university”, said Minister Raminai. “Students sitting for their examinations in peace and quiet were suddenly disrupted by truckloads of people and their supporters who stormed onto the campus and tried to forcefully and illegally install the old regime”. Such insurrectionist behavior is a contempt of the court. This futile behavior cannot be tolerated, and in this case is promoted by two prominent public servants.
“I, as Minister responsible, has made the decision on behalf of the government to suspend the old council and administration. We followed the lawful process that is clearly stated in the Higher Education Act. The National Court has on two occasions now dismissed the court case instituted by Joseph Sukwianomb and Musawe Sinabare. The second ruling by Justice Miviri was delivered on Thursday 10th June. The Honorable Justice found no merit in their challenge, and warned Sukwianomb and Sinebare that their suspension was part of an internal process established by law, and must be allowed to be completed. “Civilized people would accept the court’s decisions and wait, or if further aggrieved, lodge an appeal in the Supreme Court and not to take the law into their own hands, rile up supporters with misrepresentations of the court decision and invade the campus”, continued Hon. Raminai. The Government is firm and will not be distracted by violent and unlawful behavior. There are very serious issues of corruption and mismanagement at the University of Goroka that needs to be investigated, and that will be done. “I urge everyone to respect the new governing council and administration of Acting Vice Chancellor Dr Teng Waninga and allow them to do their job, said Hon. Raminai. “I appeal to the locals in and around the university to respect the rule of law, not to take sides, and allow peace and quiet at the campus so that students can continue their studies and complete their examinations without disruptions in the coming days.” Minister Raminai said since the attack on the campus on Friday, the government has responded by calling in police to enter campus and deal with the situation. “All actions of vandalism and break and enter are now being investigated. Arrests will follow,” the Minister stated. Statement Next : Western Pacific University Progressing Well With Infrastructure Development And Academic Programs Comments are closed.
