AUSTRALIA has given AU$1.4 million (about K3.2 million) to the University of Papua New Guinea to host the PNG Update Forum over the next three years. Australia’s high commissioner Jon Philp said Canberra viewed PNG as an important development partner in the region. “The relationship between PNG and Australia is like no other,” he said. “We share not only the international border but also business, trade and economics. “Australia is among the top countries in the world in business, but almost 80 per cent of Australia’s investments is in PNG. “We see this forum as an important way of updating both local and international investors not only about the issues affecting the country, but also solutions and remedy to those issues.”
He added that many Papua New Guineans attended the Australia National University (ANU) then returned to help develop PNG. The UPNG and ANU signed a memorandum of understanding to continue a partnership in education. Meanwhile, ANU vice-chancellor and president Professor Brian Schmidt added that the development of any country fell on the minds of the intellectuals who passed out from universities. “The skills acquired in universities play a vital role in shaping up society,” he said. “It is through universities that we see skilled men and women graduating out and helping mould and shaping a society. “PNG and Australia are at where they are because of the knowledge and skills young men and women acquired whilst studying in university.” The National / Statement/ PNG Education News Also read Comments are closed.
