By Petrus GAND What will we call the 2021-8th-June UPNG females-led protest on ‘harassment’ that prompted tremendous discrimination and humiliation, sabotaging the integrity of the premier university that produced countless patriotic citizens who run the affairs of this nation, since independence to now. Initially, the perpetrators were not apprehended and dealt with in accordance with the appropriate regulations under the UPNG constitution. It was an in-house issue that supposed to be abided by formal procedural protocols, but it progressed beyond the jurisdiction of the institution. It was unofficially publicized on Facebook, which went viral and reached incalculably huge attentions before the formal debut. The action portrays the management team as incompetent and dormant.
With lack of factual evidence from the indecent incident, the Vice President led the protest rather than coordinating it, which is utterly biased and a slap on the face of our four father’s legacy built overtime, usually continuously and unpredictably. Although the protest is part of many feminist movement in the country embraced by UNO, it demoralises the joint enthusiastic fate of our nation's leading university. The irrelevant stains of dirt splattering on one of the greatest and strongest nerve of this nation will have adverse effects on the morale of the future, present and pioneers of UPNG intellectuals. Indeed a misleading misdeed. Essentially, the general constituents must understand that UPNG is made up of five schools: School of Business and Public Policy, School of Law, School of Humanities and Social Science, School of Natural and Physical Science, and the School of Medicine and Health Science. Hypnotically, there are Certificate in Tertiary Studies (CTS) students, and there are also external modes for every schools, except the School of Law, which the bulk of students, including the internal students access the facilities at the main campus on a regular basis. The external students, including the CTS students, reside illegally on campus with their friends or relatives, while some of them manage to legally secure rooms and access the dinning hall, where the internal students only have the privilege. Though people with very lower grades and IQs have made their way in through systematic loopholes, yet they enjoy all the privileges of an internal student. Sympathetically, the system in placed are weakened as it is manipulated by corruption, having the wrong people at the wrong place, causing all these nuisances. Therefore, there is dire need for complete revival of the system and its personnel, starting from the administration down to the security divisions. It is time to regain our dignity by tightening the belts of our systems at all areas so that the system will efficiently solve it’s own emerging problems.
