![]() By Robert Iki Leso's Positive Influence Solutions I have encouraged one of my uncles not to be obsessed with phone until entering university. Since grade 3 I ensured she does not have access to phone but books. Now she is doing her grade 10 without any phone at all. When she wants to do her assignments, I load data in my phone for her to access internet. When she is done, she quickly returns my phone. Few weeks ago, she came to me excited and said, 'Dad, thank you for the advice because in my class, I am always completing all my assignments and homework and come prepared for class daily. A lot of my class mates have smartphones and they are always busy with their phones and do not get their work done. They are always under pressure trying to get their work done in the last minute messing things up.
I told her, chances of getting into university is becoming extremely tough. You need to concentrate on your school work and books without being distracted. I told her that if you put your priorities right by focusing in your studies, you can have hundreds of latest phones later. To spend your time on the phone at the cost of your education is not right. But not now. Maybe first year in the university I can buy one for you. Maybe it is tough for this young woman when everyone is going in the same direction with the technology but worths it. Some of us made it without phone and mobiles and we are here. It is the discipline, focus, hardwork and self control that makes you successful even with or without phones and laptops. Mobile phones and laptops are not the pathway to success if our children continue to abuse them and compromise academic excellence and moral standards. We the parent's should never complain when our children work around with phones instead of books and fail. When their self control and discipline is weak, that is when we should take over. Hope this generation concentrates more on books instead of phone. Next : Passing Wounds To Our Children Share your Inspirational Stories, Education Issues, Education Talk.
