Robert Iki Leso's Positive Influence Solutions As I work with the only prime university in my country, I have been well rewarded so far as I am concerned. My life has been transformed from the way I grew up as a child back in my village. I see my children enjoy the fruit of my pain, blood and sweat and think my own childhood was similar to theirs. All those pains that I have gone through, I still have scars with me that reminds me to be so thankful of the beautiful people who have pushed me this far now with an hopeful and amazing future before me. I am a son of a semi-educated father but a godly man, raised as a second born among seven siblings who grew up with me in the most extreme conditions compared to now. I grew up in a house that had no electricity, toilet and water inside. We would go look for our food beyond mountain ranges, muddy swamps and rolling hills where our gardens were located.
When I was a kid, I always got angry with my parents for sending me to go fetch water in the creeks, especially in the night. We had so many graveyards along the track and people had unconfirmed reports and rumors of encounters with ghosts. Those are replayed like horror movies in our minds as we passed through those tracks to do our chores especially during odd hours. I especially never enjoyed those part of the scene. Even our toilet pits were located outside further away from our house so I actually never enjoyed using them properly. I always rushed through due to chronic fear of ghosts mostly standing. I was always looking away in case some ugly figures from the dark would come and grab me by my throats while I did my business. We walked to school kilometers away without shoes supported only by sweet potato and water from the creek. Our education was always disturbed by tribal fights and so many village activities and turbulence such as elections. I transferred from school to school with new experiences along with anxieties, shame and humiliations to cope. Our learning has never been easy and extremely challenging. In the midst of such environment, valuing education and having hope for the future was just a figment of imagination. But God is always good as we have made it. We never had access to mobile phones, laptops and even bus services to take us back and forth from schools. It was luxury to have rice and tinned fish. I used to fight with my big sister for the empty tinned fish and the rice packet. Well, I do not know why I fought with my previous sister for those rubbish but I did. Life was difficult and sad but my parents never gave up on us. They prayed and believed on us that we could do the impossible. Now here we are – everything is provided for the hard work that we went through. And the saddest thing and the temptation is that our children think that we came the easy way like they do now. They expect everything at the press of a button or within just a request with constant persistence and insistence. Though parents are responsible to ensure the children have the best, that does not guarantee us to tailor make everything for our children. And to make us believe that children are right in putting their demands on us has to be considered again. Sometimes we try to babysit all our children by providing everything they request by indirectly spoiling them and we later regret that we have messed them up altogether. It is about time we need to tell our children what we have gone through in life to make it. We should show them our scars, wounds and the pains that we carry within our veins. We should not show them the goodies first. Such things like, they should work first before eating. Or appreciate and read the Bible and books first before being desperate for mobile phones and laptops. Or certain gratifications should be delayed for things that have lasting values. Some of you may be thinking; Robert this is none of your business as you are talking to deprive the rights of our children. Well, do not argue with me. Just go ahead and do what you wish. But never forget that the success of the future of this nation starts from our families. If we raise some egoistic, emotional, and immature young citizens who know nothing about sacrifice, hard work and pain, we will be raising citizens who may care less and become a catalyst of catastrophe for our country. OUR FAMILY COMPRISES THE FUTURE CITIZENS OF OUR NATION. LET US PREPARE FOR A FUTURE AND THE CHANGE THAT WE HOPE FOR AND BELIEVE IN BY PREPARING OUR CHILDREN THE RIGHT WAY.
