By Robert Iki Leso To serve others, we must love people. To work with others, we must humble ourselves. This is a reality in leadership. We seem to have problems in our country because we do not love the people we serve and do not humble ourselves to earn respect from those whom we work with. If we do not serve with love, we will have a lot of hatred and bitterness in society. We will value money and materials more than lives. We will value sex more than family relationships. We will value politics more than leadership. We will value revenge more than forgiveness. If we do not humble ourselves, we will develop a culture to be envious of one another and try to shoot each other down, and end up going nowhere. We will promote a competitive spirit. We will continue to live in a fool’s paradise of ivory towers. We will continue to build castles in the air. We will think about ourselves more than others. We will always gain through other people’s downfall. We will always expect others to serve us than to serve them. We will indeed have a lot of briefcase carriers, worshippers, followers, slaves, and servants in their own land.
To avoid such degrading scenarios in leadership, we need to learn, understand the principles of love and how to humble ourselves while serving others as a leader! St Paul in 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, explains love in detail exposing its amazing values and qualities. He outlines that love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hope, always perseveres. Love never fails. Cultivating love comes with all these values and virtues that we see here. Without love, the world will grow dim. The world becomes dark without love. The world becomes poisonous, bitter, and ugly without love. Without love, leadership is sour, bitter, and full of turmoil. Love is the power that brings light, life, and positive energy. It makes people grow wings and fly. Love is the true wealth that resonates with health, faith, and long life. Love is the creator and source of all the goodness, happiness, hope, assurance, and joy forevermore. When all the wealth, energy, and strength are gone, what everyone needs is love. According to Mathew Chapter 5 verses 5, blessed are humble for they shall inherit the earth. Sometimes we always think that the tough, the bully, the arrogant, and the fearful are the ones who take over and take control but that is not true. How often we are fooled and tricked by our own eyes, ears, and minds? It is the weak, small and vulnerable that is strong and powerful because of humility! It is not always the strong, powerful, extraordinary, and seemingly fearful. Why? Because they do not last. What happened to Alexander the Great, Adolf Hitler, Mussolini, Idi Amin, and other terror leaders? They are gone. Their leadership never lasted long. Most of them used threat, fear, and bloodshed to rule. Today they are gone forever. Some of their ideas are not encouraged and are suppressed because the consequences are not good. Think about the leaders like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther Kings Jr, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, and most of all Jesus Christ of Nazareth. They were leaders of love and promoted humility. Jesus is the all-time shining role model of love and humility. He started that and inspired renowned world leaders who came after him who brought down to their knees mighty armies and empires through the power of love for their people and to serve them with humility. John 3:16 vividly explains the kind of passion Jesus had in his servanthood leadership. John states that God so loved the world so much that He gave his only begotten Son. This scripture emphasizes love in the first degree and humility from the core. Time-tested values that have stood tall over time and space. Though empires have risen and fallen, these values have stood tall. Whatever love and humility have done through Jesus has stood forever into eternity. Being humble is not actually becoming vulnerable, volatile, and weak. It is actually making actions speak louder than words. It is to depict that slow waters run deep. Look at the power of ants – they look small and weak but when they work together, they achieve amazing accomplishments. Even though the locusts are small and weak, they do massive destructions in a team. Though mosquitoes may seem weak and tiny, they can poison a huge elephant to die collapsing with a loud rumble. See the power of water, fire, bees, and other related vulnerable and weak things that do amazing accomplishments. They do not have bones, muscles, weapons, and tough appearances but they do wonders. Their poisons are devastating, their influences and impacts are time immemorial even into eternity. Though we can have the wealth, knowledge, fame, and popularity, if we use people for our own convenience; And allow them to follow us simply because they fear us or we feed them with some quick bucks and goodies; Which we obviously know will not last long, we are fake leaders whose impacts and legacies will be taken away by the wind of history without any memories. FOR PEOPLE TO REMEMBER US AND FOR US TO CHANGE THEIR MINDSETS AND MAKE THEM SELF-RELIANT, WE NEED TO SERVE WITH LOVE AND INFLUENCE WITH HUMILITY!
