![]() LESS fortunate students from Southern Highlands can now study in the United States, says founder of Yer Education Foundation (YEF) Jackson Yer. Yer informed the crowd who witnessed the launch of the YER Foundation at Momei Oval in Mendi recently. “Since its establishment in 2018, it has helped more than seven students from poor family backgrounds and those who have been rejected by the education system in PNG to undertake studies in the US,” he said. Three of the seven students have graduated in business and science courses and two of them are married and permanent residents of Maine in the US. The education programme is fully funded by Jackson and his wife Elizabeth. It is based in Maine. The couple told The National that they were thinking of establishing an office in Mendi, Southern Highlands, and Port Moresby soon.
Yer said its mission was to provide education opportunities for the less fortunate students in PNG. “We have tried out for the seven students from Mendi and it worked,” he said. The criteria, terms and conditions will be written down once offices are established in PNG,” Yer said. Yer said he needed support to make sure more students were sponsored each year to study abroad. “It is not a family thing, it belongs to the people and anyone can apply and be a part of the programme if you meet the right criteria and requirements,” he said. Yer believes that education is a fundamental human right and a key driver of individuals and societal progress. A portion of land was given to the foundation by the Southern Highlands health authority (PHA) after seeing the significance it would contribute to building human resource in the province. PHA curative health services’ Dr Martin Sa’avu said health and education were two important sectors that worked side by side for a strong and healthy nation. Dr Sa’avu said when people were healthy and educated, the nation prospered. “Education is a fundamental pillar for socio-economic development in the country and those countries that prioritise education are seeing to be superiors than those that failed and PNG is one of them that failed miserably,” he said.
