![]() The Western Pacific University in Ialibu, Southern Highlands is still waiting for funds to complete its projects. The University has 6 phases of projects which it only secured funding for the first phase which include construction of core infrastructures. These include, students’ mess, administration building, lecture hall, male and female dormitories and a sewerage system. Public Relations – Administration, Thomas Undupie, told FM100 NEWS, these projects are on hold, pending funding, but normal academic activities continue. FM100 News understands that on March 26, this year, construction workers for the WPU project were also laid off, according to sources on ground. However, a Chinese-based company is currently on campus, to build an e-library for the university. Mr. Undupie explains the university did not receive any funding from this year’s budget. He further reveals that 300 students were accepted into the university for this academic year, but due to the campus location, the current COVID-19 pandemic, more students had withdrawn from studies. The school now is left with 54 pioneer students. However, things may look up, as FM100 News understands that last Friday (May 14), Department of Higher Education, Research and Technology (DHERST) Secretary Professor, Fr. Jan Czuba, met with the university, announcing that the Prime Minister James Marape, had consulted the Treasury Department to release funding for the university. As to the how much this funding may be, FM100 NEWS will hope to find out from the DHERST Minister Wesley Raminai, after being unable today to get a response.
