![]() The University of Papua New Guinea Student Representative Council on behalf of the vast majority of Students would like to sincerely apologize to the Media regarding what transpired on (Tuesday 8th June, 2021). It is regrettable and was completely shameful and we take full responsibility for the events that occurred as a result of the forum. However we would like to make clear that this does not reflect that vast majority of students. The forum organized was to address issues of general security and safety on campus which have been prevalent for many years. We stand in solidarity with our sisters and womenfolk on campus and all around the country. Any form of harassment whether verbal or physical is unacceptable and should not be tolerated or justified for that matter. This is especially so in a higher learning institution. The issues surrounding female safety and security and even general security are problems that are deeply rooted in every institution in this country. It is an issue that we as a nation struggle with. That is why the UPNG SRC supported and will continue to support our women and sisters when they want to raise their voices against these injustices. The negative media headlines and reports are a wakeup call for this premier institution and a reminder that we need to take a bold stand. All the problems we face today are a glimpse of our future and we must try to see this event as positive regardless of the negative headlines. We are able to recognize at this me that there is a problem and are issues in this institution, before it becomes too late. We look forward to working with the UPNG Council and Administration in constructively trying to address these problems and resurrect this institution to its former glory. The UPNG SRC will present its resolution to council and if these measures are not swiftly implemented by the administration and governing Council. They will be held accountable. The Administration has failed to swiftly act and penalize students to hold them accountable and set an example. We the students also take ownership for being a part of the problem. This means that we are also a key player in finding the solutions. This is a wakeup call that must be answered both by students and the administration. We can only get through these difficult mess when we work together and not point fingers or shift the blame. This is the University of Papua New Guinea and it belongs to all the sons and daughters of this land. We should take responsibility and ownership of this Institution and strive to be the best. There is work to be done and this will take all stakeholders and the students, who are a vital part of this transition. We know that if we want change we must be the agents of change. We must respect our women, take ownership of this institution and this country.
