Bradley Yombom-Copio is the new University of Papua New Guinea Student Representative Council President for 2021. He was declared yesterday when reaching the absolute majority set at 1,500 plus 1 following the elimination of the fifth candidate. This is the first time in the history of UPNG for a student at the Medical Faculty to claim the seat. In second place was a third-year Law student Cleopas Suehe who scored 1,200 plus votes, a difference of almost 200 votes, Seven male contestants vied for the seat. The male vice president also went to a Medical Faculty student, Dominic Painui who was declared also yesterday. The female vice president is Nancy Paglu. The writs for the election will be returned to the University Management by the Electoral Commission today, 23rd October 2020. Returning Officer Terence Hetinu is pleased with the outcome of the election process and voting, however, it was evident there were a lot of informal ballot papers identified during the counting. The elected SRC representatives will carry out their duties in 2021 after years of absence when the SRC was suspended in 2016 following student protest against the government over political issues during the O'Neil-led government.
