A UNIVERSITY student was one of two people killed in a road accident in Eastern Highlands last Tuesday. The student who was in his final year of studies at the PNG University of Technology, and the other deceased were part of K92 Mining Inc’s community affairs team, according to mine chief executive officer John Lewins. Lewins said the accident occurred on May 2, offsite from the mining lease area, on a country road.
“On behalf of K92 Mining, to the family, friends and co-workers of our two colleagues, we offer our sincerest condolences and heartfelt prayers during this very difficult time,” he said. Lewins said the mine’s emergency services responded to the incident and the authorities were notified and an investigation was underway. He said K92 was also working with its employees, contractors and the families of the deceased to provide the required support and counselling needed during this challenging and difficult time of losing a loved one. “K92 places an utmost focus on safety and industry best practices,” he added. “There were unfortunately two fatalities as a result of the accident. “This is a tragic incident and an investigation is under way, both by the police and of course by the company. “The accident occurred on a country road some distance from the mine and is not associated with the mining operations. “We are providing support to the families of deceased and also to our employees who have been impacted by the incident.” The University of Technology department of communication and development studies also released a statement on the incident. Department head Dr Racheal Aisoli-Orake said it was with “the saddest regret that we announce the death of the late Hereman Kinda, a final-year student from the department. “He was doing his industrial training with K92 Mining Ltd, in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands, where he was met by this tragedy,” she said. “The senior management, staff and students of the PNG UoT convey our heartfelt condolences to the immediately family of late Hereman Kinda on his untimely passing.” Statement/TheNational/PNGEducation news Also read Comments are closed.
