A SCHOOL in Port Moresby wants regular police patrols to stop the harassment of students and teachers by hooligans. Sacred Heart Primary School headmistress Sheila Sabarei, in a report to parents and students on May 1 said students in Grade Seven and Grade Eight were even chased out of their classrooms by drunkards. “They threw stones into the classrooms from outside through the fence,” Sabarei said. “The students were brought down to the assembly area under the trees and were kept there for their safety the whole day. “Police in Hohola were called to assist but none came.” No comment could be obtained from police. She said some came to sell items to the students.
“We have been challenged with outsiders crawling in or jumping over the fence and coming into the school every now and then, harassing students, stealing from students, selling smoke and other things to students, threatening students and even teachers,” she said. Sabarei said on May 3, the school’s sacred images were broken into pieces and discarded along the school walkway. “These sacred images are the identity of this Catholic school which symbolises the faith this school as a Catholic agency school,” she said. Sabarei added that classrooms had been broken into, with books and other belongings destroyed or stolen. “Our water pipes every now and then are broken and the reserve tanks lids opened. “Toilets are broken into making them unsafe for students to use.” The school in Hohola has a student population of 2,400.
