THERE is a need for more specialised teachers to teach students with disabilities and special needs in the country, an official says. Programme coordinator of the Callan Inclusive Education Resource Centre (IERC) at Gerehu in the National Capital District, Belinda Sausi, said the centre was in need of more specialist teachers to teach students with autism. Autism based on research is a neurodevelopment-mental brain based lifelong condition.
Early signs of autism include inability to relate to others, hyper acting or passivity, oversensitive, poor speech or lack of speech, spinning or running around in circles and avoiding eye contact to name a few. “It is a condition that makes one see the world so much differently from someone without autism and to teach these group of students, we need people who would have a lot of patience and the passion to work at the centre and help our team,” Sausi said. She said the centre only had one specialised teacher, however, with the recent increase in enrolment of students with autism, there was need for more. The International Autism Day was celebrated on April 2, but the Callan celebrated it on Wednesday. Sausi said the main idea of the celebration was to bring awareness on autism to parents and the public. She said there were many Papua New Guineans that had autism and they needed teachers to be trained to understand and help this special group of people. Anna Thomas, a teacher at the centre, who specialises in teaching students with hearing and visual impairments, said students with autism were another group of special needs students that required care and attention. “We are trained only to teach those with hearing and visual impairment but this group is the latest at the centre which we would need a separate team to help,” Thomas said.
