TEACHERS serving in remote schools in the country will be given an extra annual allowance at the end of the academic year through the Papua New Guinea Teachers Association (PNGTA). Association president Aita Sanangkepe said this after an agreement with the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) which will see the annual allowance be effective as of this year under three categories. “Elementary, primary and secondary teachers serving at remote schools are entitled to K5,000; those at very remote areas will get K6,000 and K7,000 and will be paid to those serving at the extremely remote areas,” Sanangkepe said.
He said it was a type hardship allowance given to them based on the challenges they endure to provide education. “Teachers are required to fill forms at their respective provincial headquarters, on how remote they are so information can be submitted to education office for payments.” “The respective provincial headquarters will identify which school falls under the three categories of remoteness so that teachers are paid accordingly.” Vice president Synel Ko’ou said it was a first of its kind for teachers in the country, over the years they had been serving at remote parts of the country with no recognition. He said this was one of several initiatives the PNGTA was undertaking apart from working for a three per cent increase to teacher pay which was under negotiation. “It is very important for teachers to know that when you serve in a remote school you will be rewarded with an allowance.” Sanangkepe emphasised that teachers needed to be properly looked after so they could provide quality education and urged them to be patient regardless of the challenges. Teachers will resume on Mon, Jan 22 and student registration and enrolment will be on the following week. The National / PNG Education news Also read
