![]() IF the PNG Government wants quality education, it must produce quality teachers and consider their welfare, a senior teacher says. Wardstrip Demonstration Primary School head teacher Rotona Girana said this yesterday during his remarks at the World Teachers’ Day celebration in National Capital District. “I call on the Government to ensure that in any national planning like the medium term development strategy, the teaching profession and the teachers’ terms and conditions of employment must not be ignored,” he said. “Since 2011, our Government has allowed improvements in teachers’ salaries through negotiated awards with PNG Teachers Association.
“But it would be better through the recognition of teachers’ status as per the 1966 recommendations.” Girana said the Government should have considered improving teachers’ terms and conditions as a result of reformed education policies where in most cases, there seemed to be a trend of increased teacher workloads. “I appeal to our employer that it is important to involve teachers in all formulation of the country’s education policies to embrace our status,” he said. “I call on the Government to also build classrooms to provide conducive learning environments for students’ learnings and supply schools with students’ and teachers’ resource books and learning materials.” Bavaroko Junior High School senior teacher Joseph Dongari, who has taught for 29 years, said teachers needed to be recognised and appreciated. “Teachers must be awarded certificates for different levels of consistent services from 15, 25 and 30 years of service,” he said. “Giving full payments for teachers leave fares and housing needs to be prirotised as currently we are faced with challenges as results of changes in the curriculum structure.” The National / PNG Education news Also read Comments are closed.
