A 19-year-old student is in court in Waigani, Port Moresby, charged with causing grievous bodily harm after breaking the fingers on his aunt’s left hand in June. The student, Samson Kowas from Mendi in Southern Highlands, allegedly committed the crime after he was told not to insult his aunt, Naomi Kowas. “The defendant received the hand-up brief last week. He is currently a student and last week was his exam week,” said Kim Watakapura from the Office of the Public Solicitor. Watakapura informed the court that she also received instruction from the defendant on Tuesday that he would no longer be needing her aid.
She said she would file a cease to act. Committal Court magistrate Danny Wakikura adjourned the matter for two weeks to allow the cease to act to be filed, and for the defendant to find himself a new lawyer. magistrate Wakikura informed the defendant that he and his new lawyer would make his submissions when they resumed. “Let’s have all those in order before we resume in two weeks’ time, on Oct 10,” he said. It was alleged that on June 10 this year, the defendant insulted his aunt and used a piece of timber to hit her hand while she was mopping the floor of the house they both reside at in Rainbow, NCD. He then allegedly threatened her with a knife. The complainant was rushed to the hospital and was told she would need to have surgery on her hand.
