DISCIPLINE is one of the biggest problems for Ted Diro Primary School, says head teacher Cecilia Kelgai. Kelgai added that the teachers were trying their best to lift the standard of the school, its discipline and the status. “We are looking for ways to maintain and revive (good) behaviours from students as well as the standard of some facilities,” she said. “It’s not only the teachers will do this but I am urging the parents and guardians of students who are attending Ted Diro to help and support the teachers to deal with the students’ behaviour in school.” Kelgai said school had grown following an influx of students and there were not enough classrooms to cater for all the students.
“We have student enrolments of over 4,000 children and the classrooms in the school are insufficient to cater for all of them,” she said. “We need more classrooms in the school for students to make learning efficient.” Kelgai said the Education Department was serious about the student-teacher ratio in all schools in the National Capital District (NCD) – 45 students to a teacher. “However, in Ted Diro we have the ratio of 1:80-90 students in a class and teaching and learning are not effectively done,” she said. “This creates challenges for teachers in managing large class sizes and in providing learning instruction to cater for each students’ needs. “We need support and assistance for new infrastructure, especially classrooms, because with such facilities available more teachers can come and teach in this school. “As well as the student-teacher ratio would be done according to what is expected so that teaching and learning can effectively take place.” The National / PNG Education News Also read Comments are closed.
