PRIMARY Schools in the country will now use new text books to improve teaching and learning standards, Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra says. Kombra thanked the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) and the Japanese government for giving 1.8 million text books to the department in Port Moresby yesterday. He said this was a major achievement for the department because they had been advocating for text books since the reintroduction of the standard-based curriculum.
“The development of science and mathematics text books for grade three up to grade six will play a vital role in supplementing teaching and the roles that they have in the implementation of the standard-based curriculum,” he said. Kombra said the text books would be used by students with a target of one child per text book policy that was in line with the National Education plan. He said this was successfully done through the partnership between the Education Department, Jica and the government of Japan under the project for implementing quality of mathematics and science education which started in 2016. Kombra said the books were written by Papua New Guineans for the local curriculum. He said 80,000 teachers manuals and tablets would also be distributed to schools.
