THE cost of one student attending a university is about K90,000- K120,000 and lecturers must deliver quality education to students, an official says. University of Papua New Guinea chancellor Robert Igara said university staff must use the available resources to deliver according to the university’s expectation. “The university employs people to deliver quality education and every staff member is employed for the university under a binding agreement to deliver certain expectations,” he said. Igara said at the end of the year, students would graduate as intellectuals and thinking as fully qualified university graduates.
Igara said this was a rough cost because they don’t have time to calculate all the costs of the units. “We still have a lot to do to get the full cost of the students’ fees,” he said. Igara urged the university staff to appoint someone who could lead the schools and look at every opportunity to grow and prosper. He said given the two universities coming up, there would be competition of State resources, especially funding would be important. Vice chancellor Professor Frank Griffin said the university expected more than 5,000 students to be enrolled this year but the numbers were yet to be confirmed. Griffin said the registration that had been extended for two weeks ended last Friday and those students that were late would pay a penalty fee. He said he could not remember the exact fee but it depended on the days students went in for registration.
