![]() SIR Peter Barter had kept Papua New Guinea close to his heart and always wanted the best for the country, an academic says. Western Pacific University (WPU) president Dr Janet Rangou said this during a memorial service to celebrate the life and achievement of Sir Peter at the institution’s campus in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands yesterday. “Today is the celebration of the life of a man whom we all uphold and respect,” she said. “For us, we can only look at him, his life, in remembrance of what he did and his legacy and try to emulate such a role model.” “This is a day of celebration, the great deeds that he did, the lives that he touched. PLANS are underway for a newly formed students association to conduct awareness in communities about the purpose of population control, association president Joram Kilwa Kapma says.
Kapma said Population Studies Student’s Association from the University of Papua New Guinea, was established this year by final year students to educate people about the importance of population control. “Our association has just been established and we do not have financial and logistical capacity to move around as yet, but we are planning to do so as soon as we have the support and capacity,” Kapma said. This was followed by information given by the assistant returning officer Hubert Sipa that they had only 1,500 ballot papers available for that section of Ward 10 in the Moresby North-West district. “We are working with the numbers we have from the common roll and if anyone does not have their name on it then it’s not our fault,” Sipa said.“We set up a voters registration site in the university campus last Wednesday but no one turned up to confirm names or even register,” he added. The Papua New Guinea UNIVERSITY of Natural Resource Environment (UNRE) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Issac Pue’s leave application to review Higher Education Minister Wesley Raminai’s decision for revoking him will be heard at the National Court tomorrow.
Raminai, through a national gazette on Feb 15, revoked Pue and appointed Dr Moik Komolong as the UNRE VC. On Feb 22, Pue through his lawyer Edward Sasingian, obtained an interim stay order on Raminai’s decision which allowed him to remain as the VC pending the matter in court. ![]() Leading Learning 3 is a #PNGAusPartnership Secondary Schools (PASS) activity aimed at supporting the implementation of PNG’s education policy and improvement frameworks, like the National Approach to School Standards Assessment (NASSA) tool, which is used to evaluate the quality of standards of a school. For the first time, the Leading Learning 3 workshop was co-delivered by PASS and the PNG National Department of Education (NDoE) to strengthen secondary school education practices and support school leaders to be change makers in their provinces. The workshop also supports NDoE to build capability across 12 provinces to deliver the NASSA tool and utilise the model for wider roll out across PNG. ![]() THE International Training Institute (ITI) has awarded scholarships to 18 first-year students to help them complete their studies. Diploma in Business Management student Mary Bae who was among recipients told The National that she was thankful for the opportunity as without it she would not have been able to complete her first year of studies. “Not everyone is financially able to enter into a private school such as ITI and the opportunity like this is very much appreciated,” she said. The 20-year-old last attended Marianville Secondary School. Miriam Kekerem is currently undertaking an Australia Awards Graduate Certificate in Health Science short course which she will complete in December. ![]() SAINT Gabriel’s Technical Secondary School in Kiunga, Western, organised a two-day scout training camp for its students recently. The aim of the camp held on July 4-5 was to provide life skills training for a group of 30 students – 16 boy scouts and 14 girls – to add to their physical, intellectual and social development. The training was based on scouts’ law. It included learning through interesting and practical activities guided by scout master Brother Lucianus Lakra ALT with assistance from Sister Selvarani and Betina Potabu. The 30 students learnt scout skills and protocols such as the marching, saluting, hand shake, tying knots, lashing and setting up tents using scouting equipment, making camp fires, hand signalling, first aid, fighting fires and safety and learning songs and dances. THE Papua New Guinea Department of Education has made great strides in aiming to improve inclusive education for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) by braille materials for vision impaired children in grade eight.
Speaking recently on the last day of a five-day disability inclusion workshop in Port Moresby, Allan Jim, the assistant secretary for the teacher education division at the Department of Education, listed a number of ways in which the department was trying to be more inclusive. “We are starting to braille materials for those in grade eight, giving a child who’s blind the opportunity to progress,” he said. “We are also working with our measurement services division, to give children with special needs extra time during exams to complete their papers well. |
