A MEETING conducted by a small number of National Capital District teachers last Friday was illegal because it was not authorised by Papua New Guinea Teacher’s Association (PNGTA), says president Aita Sanangkepe. Sanangkepe said the union was not aware of the meeting and the people who organised it were not supposed to without the approval of PNGTA. “Teachers, you missed your teaching hours to attend this meeting which is not right,” he said. He clarified that PNGTA has gone several times to the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) but were not welcomed to hold roundtable discussions.
Sanangkepe said the three percent salary increment was not negotiable as it was by law that all public servants were required to receive that three per cent, given the increase in prices of goods and services every year. He said there was a lack of coordination and collaboration between PNGTA, TSC and the Education Department in addressing the issue. “If secretary and chairman allowed us on the National Education Board, we would have already solved this issue, other log of teachers’ claims and other issues affecting them throughout the country,” he said. Sanangkepe said more than 68,000 teachers would miss out while other public servants would, which was unfair. “There is no other way to solve this unless the PNGTA, Education Department and Teaching Service Commission work together as our roles are to serve teachers in PNG,” he said.
