![]() TEACHERS in PNG have been told that they will not be receiving salary increments this year because their log of claims have yet to be submitted to the Teaching Service Commission (TSC). Former Papua New Guinea Teacher’s Association national general-secretary Ugwalubu Mowana told teachers in Port Moresby who had demanded answers on why they missed out this year. “If you are to go on strike, you will be in big trouble as the TSC will ask for your log of claims which your union has not submitted,” he told the teachers. Mowana said the union had failed to make the submission to TSC to negotiate with the Personnel Management Department for the increment.
A spokesperson and retired teacher said teachers were upset about this and demanded the union to make a submission. He said teachers had agreed to a three-year term for union executives and not five years. “The term for the current executive term will expire next month,” he said. He said teachers also agreed for only masters and degree qualified teachers to be elected as national executive members. TSC chairman Samson Wangihomie said PNGTA had yet to submit the teachers’ log of claims. “PNGTA was supposed to put in log of claims for us to negotiate pay increase for teachers but they did not do that and instead blamed the Department of Education and the TSC for not doing what we supposed to do, we will appreciate if they submit the claims and we negotiate,” he said.
