THE PNG National Airports Corporation (NAC) hosted a successful field trip for the University of Technology (Unitech) students last month to the current construction at the Nadzab airport redevelopment project. NAC’s project management unit hosted the field trip for two groups of engineering students from the Unitech’s civil engineering department. According to an NAC statement, the students had the opportunity to tour the multi-million kina Nadzab Airport redevelopment project in Morobe. Field trips were a critical part of the students’ learning experience which allowed them to see the different aspects of their broad civil engineering study programme.
The project was a major multi-disciplinary engineering project comprising of earthworks, drainage, water supply and sewerage works, pavement works, building, including structural works, electrical and mechanical works, including air-conditioning and architectural works. The project also practised the highest safety and environmental standards as required with a current loss time injury free of 1.9 million-plus man-hours across the entire site. During the field trip, experts from the Japanese consultant Oriental Consultants Global and Azusa Sekkei Joint Venture, along with their local sub-consultant Stocks and Partners, in cooperation with the Japanese main contractor Dai Nippon Nippo JV and its sub-contractors, Hebou Constructions and Fletcher Morobe, gave the students a tour into constructing such a major project.
