THE University of Goroka (UOG) in Papua New Guinea recently celebrated the world’s languages and Papua New Guinea’s indigenous languages. The French embassy in Port Moresby said in a statement that this year marked the start of the international decade (2022-2032) of indigenous languages. The university’s world language strand in its language and literature division organised an event to promote the teaching and learning of languages – Bahassa Indonesia, Japanese and French are taught at UOG. French Ambassador Guillaume Lemoine, together with New Caledonia government representative Alexandre Lafargue travelled to Goroka to support French teacher Dawn Solevad Ilai.
Lemoine presented the “Francophonie” that refers to men and women who share French as a common language. He said there were more than 320 million French speakers around the world. He said French was the fifth most widely spoken language in the world, the fourth most used language on internet and the second language used in diplomacy. Ilai said learning French was a challenge that could open up ones’ mind to new perspectives and help one connect with different people around the world.
