THE new Early Childhood Teacher Training Institution in Morobe launched last month should start operation next year, an official says. Morobe Education Reform director Haring Qoreka said a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Lutheran Church of PNG and the Education Department through the PNG Education Institute (PNGEI) was the first phase. Qoreka said the MoU allowed the department to acquire an abandoned church college facility in Finschhafen and convert it into PNG’s first Early Childhood College. “According to the MOU, we hope to see it (college) commence next year,” he said.
Qoreka said PNGEI would design the application form and the provincial elementary office would facilitate the filling of applications. “We would like to start off the college enrollment with the 2015 graduates – those that we trained as elementary teachers but were not registered and not on the payroll,” he said. “These are the first group of teachers we want to train so that as soon as they attend one full semester or six-month course, they graduate with a certificate, after that the department can continue to offer diplomas.” Qoreka said this college was a national college under the Education Department so after about three years, it would start accepting students from other provinces. “This college is to train our field elementary teachers with early childhood learning so that they can know the basics, the appropriate skills and knowledge to be able to deliver the quality education in early childhood.” Qoreka said the provincial education office was currently carrying out awareness about the new college through gatherings like graduations, school meetings and cluster meetings. “It’s now up to the people, government and stakeholders to understand what we are doing here and provide support to ensure that this college is fully established and up and running to benefit our people and children,” he said.
