![]() PAPUA New Guinea Teachers’ Association (PNGTA) president Aita Sanangkepe appeared in court yesterday charged with misappropriating more than K200,000 belonging to the association Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Paul Puri Nii said that he had revoked an arrest warrant when Sanangkepe appeared in court after three consecutive absences. Sanangkepe, 66, from Pame village, Hagen Central, Western Highlands, was charged with one count of misappropriation of K214,275.03 Police said between May 13 and 20, 2021, Sanangkepe bought and registered a 10-seater Toyota Landcruiser station wagon under his name using money from a special project fund of the PNGTA.
It was alleged that Sanangkepe’s name appeared on a quotation raised with Toyota Tshuso (PNG) Ltd in the National Capital District which followed a proforma invoice and later a bank cheque. It was alleged that Sanangkepe had also registered the vehicle under his name with Motor Vehicles Insurance Ltd (MVIL). It was noted that the president for the PNGTA NCD branch, Robert Sailas, later learned of the alleged purchase when a K214,275.03 was debited from the PNGTA special project fund. The matter was reported to MVIL and the vehicle was flagged. Sanangkepe was arrested and charged at the criminal investigation division in Boroko on Oct 17, 2021, and later released on bail.
