![]() Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra has confirmed that the Government Tuition Fee Subsidy has been successfully deposited into the bank accounts of schools across the country. The funds for schools in decentralized provinces were released last Thursday, marking a significant step in ensuring uninterrupted education. Dr. Kombra stated that Bank South Pacific (BSP) and Kina Bank have credited the accounts of schools with bank accounts at these institutions. Additionally, Westpac Bank has processed payments for all elementary schools and the second batch of payments for national schools of excellence, secondary schools, and vocational centers. "I appeal to all school heads to keep the schools open because the funds have already been credited by the banks," Dr. Kombra urged. He noted, however, that some schools might not receive their allocations immediately due to issues related to the closure of their bank accounts. He encouraged these schools to resolve their banking issues promptly to access their funds.
Dr. Kombra advised schools that missed out on this payment to contact their provincial tuition fee coordinators to rectify their accounts or submit their latest school census forms to ensure they receive future payments. Education Minister Lucas Dekena previously announced that K212.4 million in tuition fee subsidies was with the Bank of Papua New Guinea (PNG) for transfer to commercial banks. Morobe provincial education adviser Keith Tangui confirmed that K12.6 million had been received, with K4 million distributed to high and secondary schools on Monday. Despite the disbursement, some schools had opted to close down without the approval of the provincial education board. Tangui emphasized the need for schools to remain operational and suggested alternative measures such as fundraising or engaging agriculture students in planting food crops to sustain school activities. "Stop giving excuses and operate on credits," Tangui said, urging schools to find creative solutions to maintain operations until all funding issues are resolved. The government’s swift action in disbursing the tuition fee subsidy aims to ensure that educational institutions can continue to function smoothly and provide uninterrupted learning experiences for students nationwide.
