![]() Madang, Papua New Guinea – In a commendable initiative to mark Media Freedom Day on Friday, May 3rd, Communication Arts students from Divine Word University (DWU) visited three primary schools and one secondary school in Madang town. The event was held under the global theme “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of Environmental Crisis” and aimed to raise awareness about environmental issues through the power of journalism. The DWU students conducted educational programs at Kusbau Primary School, Tusbab Secondary School, Holy Spirit Primary School, and Lutheran Day Primary School, focusing on how local communities can report and respond to environmental crises. At Kusbau Primary School, both students and teachers expressed their gratitude for the enlightening session held during the morning assembly. The CA students presented on climate change, using informative charts to highlight key issues and engage the young audience.
“The students engaged well and were attentive throughout the presentations. Some asked questions and thanked us at the end of the presentation. The teachers were grateful for the engagement and were happy that what we presented on was related to what they were currently teaching,” said Rosemary Mase, a second-year CA student at DWU. The interactive sessions included a question-and-answer segment where students who responded correctly were rewarded with DWU Calendars or Diaries. This approach not only encouraged participation but also reinforced the students’ understanding of the critical environmental topics discussed. Reflecting on the day’s activities, the CA students expressed satisfaction with the outcome of their awareness campaign. “It was a great experience to go out and celebrate Media Freedom Day by engaging with school students. Climate change is a very serious issue, and as future journalists, it is our ethical responsibility to report on it and inform the general public about what is really going on,” Mase added. The initiative was well-received across all the visited schools, reinforcing the importance of media freedom and the role of journalism in addressing global challenges like climate change. Through their efforts, the DWU Communication Arts students not only celebrated Media Freedom Day but also empowered the younger generation to be more aware and proactive about environmental issues.
