In a bid to enhance the nation's media landscape and foster collaboration between academia and the government, the Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Hon. Timothy Masiu, has proposed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Journalism and Public Relations strand of the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG). During a gathering to commemorate World Press Freedom Day on Friday, May 3, Minister Masiu commended the resilience and dedication of the UPNG Journalism and Public Relations program in shaping the next generation of journalists and communicators. He emphasized the critical role of a free press and free media in upholding truth, justice, and accountability in society. "It is with great pleasure that I stand before you today; despite facing resource limitations, this program has shown exceptional commitment," remarked Minister Masiu.
Highlighting the high employment rate of Journalism graduates from UPNG, Minister Masiu underscored the lasting impact of the institution on Papua New Guinea's media landscape. Acknowledging the evolving trends in the media industry, particularly in the digital age, Minister Masiu urged the institution to adapt and embrace technological advancements. "As we move forward, it’s imperative to review and upgrade curricula," he emphasized. "Equip your institutions with relevant technologies to train journalists capable of leveraging these tools to disseminate information effectively." The proposed MoU aims to formalize cooperation between the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology and UPNG's Journalism and Public Relations strand, fostering mutual support and collaboration to advance media education and industry practices in Papua New Guinea.
