PNG Education Minister Jimmy Uguro says trainee teachers must be properly accommodated prior to training programmes. He was reacting to a media report in this paper this week about 50 female trainees accommodated at a primary school library in East New Britain being robbed on Monday. The trainees, from Gaulim Teachers’ College, were held up by criminals at Kalamanagunan Primary School in Kokopo. It was understood that there was no report of any injury. Uguro had directed Education Department secretary Dr Uke Kombra to investigate why the trainee teachers were being accommodated in the school library and not proper accommodation at the school.
“All trainee teachers are always given proper accommodation at schools prior to actual training programmes,” he said. “It is the responsibility of schools and its board after liaison with respective teacher colleges.” Provincial police commander Chief Insp Januarius Vosivai said the incident occurred between 1am and 2am on Monday.
