THE PNG Education Department has distributed Standard Based Education syllabuses and teachers’ guides for primary and elementary schools, secretary Dr Uke Kombra says. He said for secondary schools, the books had been printed over the Christmas break and they were waiting for funds to be distributed. “We have done training for secondary teachers and we are waiting for the funds to come and we can distribute them to all the secondary schools – teachers’ guides and syllabuses – so that’s the first phase. The second phase is to actually go into the students’ resource books,” he said. “To go into heavy production of students’ resource books and teachers’ resource books will be the next phase of funding but in the meantime they will continue to use the content that is there. The content is still the same.” However, a teacher at Boreboa Primary School in Port Moresby Michelle Helebi said their school received some materials (books) for teachers and students but it was not enough.
She said the teachers’ syllabuses were not enough and they had to share them which had slowed the learning and teaching processes. Another teacher, Jenny Kaisa, said it would be better if students had their own resource books so they could understand what was being taught. Kaisa said the teachers had to write out everything on the blackboard and most of the time students forgot what was being taught.
