THE upgrading of national high schools has resulted in a better performance by students last year, says secondary education management and coordination director Benny Rayappan. He told The National that the Government wanted special schools to be called schools of excellence with the advancement in science and technology. The schools of excellence are Sogeri, Aiyura, Passam, Kerevet, Wawin and Port Moresby national high schools. Rayappan said the policy was launched by Prime Minister James Marape last year.
“When he (Marap) was education minister, the idea was brought up in Cabinet,” he said. “Cabinet approved in 2009 that all national high schools were to become schools of excellence. “During a seminar in 2011, (Marape) said they realised that the schools were very old and the standards were unacceptable. “So we asked the Government to give us funding – around K10 million for all the national high schools.” “ Selection criteria was raised too. “Now we can say that the national high schools are in the top 10 as they are performing very well.” The National/PNG Education News Next : United Church University (UCU) In PNG Focuses On Rural Development, Upskilling Students Comments are closed.
