![]() THE Marape-Basil Government is supporting the Port Moresby General Hospital in its investigations into the death of 14-year-old Rex Wanzing two weeks ago following an eye operation, Prime Minister Jamers Marape says. Marape said the Government, while passing its sympathies to the family, was aware of an investigation by the hospital management. He said the outcome of the investigation would be made known as soon as it was completed. “We have given full support to the investigations and we are waiting to see the outcome,’’ he said. Benjamin Wanzing told The National that his son Rex had a growth on his left eye (corneal disease) and was admitted for surgery. The parents are from Morobe and Central. Mother Raela, who was with him in hospital, said Rex went into the operating theatre on Aug 12, but had a high temperature and breathing difficulties when he was wheeled out.
He died the next day (Friday). Raela said the doctor had told her that Rex’s lungs had collapsed because he had opened his eyes during the operation and was “shocked”. She said when Rex was wheeled out after the operation, his temperature was so high and he was breathing heavily. The hospital in a statement said that: “The events on Thursday, Aug 12, 2021, were shocking and traumatising, not only for the relatives and the public but also to the staff of PMGH.” Chief executive officer Dr Paki Molumi said: “This unfortunate event, preliminarily believed to be related to the administration of a batch of anaesthetic, is being investigated by the PMGH clinical audit team. “To ensure that the root cause(s) is identified, an independent investigating committee with clear terms of reference will be sanctioned by the Minister of Health. “The reference will be directed towards identifying the root cause(s) to clearly establish the exact cause of death. “PMGH board and management will ensure the investigation is thorough in order to assist the grieving parents and relatives.” The National / PNG Education News next : Students To Benefit From New ‘Milk In School’ Programme Comments are closed.
