THE Government, under James Marape, is supporting flexible open and distance education (Fode) to address the high number of school dropouts last year, Education Minister Jimmy Uguro says. Uguro told The National yesterday that the Covid-19 had impacted students’ learning last year which resulted in 17,000 students missing out. He said to address this issue, the Government was embarking on funding and establishing Fode centres in the country so no student was left behind. Uguro said the Government was subsidising the programme.
“With Fode, we are accommodating the school leavers, we are opening up opportunities for those who have been left out and taking them on board,” he said. Uguro said the Education Department was directed to incorporate Fode centres at high schools and nominated primary schools throughout the country “Fode students will study the same content and they will sit for the same exams, so no one should be left behind,” he said. “All students must be equally educated; last year, there was a big drop so the Government is now addressing this issue through Fode.” Uguro said the Government would prioritise Fode and would pay the full tuition fees making it fee-free starting this year. He said teachers would be paid an allowance for teaching Fode using the required materials to teach students.
