Good Shepherd Lutheran Secondary School in Madang needs K1 million to rebuild and restock its science laboratory after it was gutted by fire last week, according to principal Ben Tamilong. The fire, which destroyed chemicals, equipment, textbooks, and old exam papers, has significantly impacted the students, Tamilong said. Built around 1994, the lab's reconstruction and restocking costs are estimated to be substantial. "We had chemicals, equipment, textbooks, and old exam papers that would cost around K1 million," Tamilong noted. Police are still investigating the cause of the fire, but Tamilong emphasized his commitment to ensuring that learning continues uninterrupted, particularly with the Grade 10 mock examinations approaching. "My teachers and I will make sure that learning is not jeopardised as we are planning for the mock exams for the grade 10s written expression paper," he stated.
Despite the setback, plans for the mock exams remain on track. "I was briefed by the Grade 10 English teacher and coordinator that their plans will stand and they will conduct the second mock grade 10 written expression exams today," Tamilong added. Students are set to sit for their Grade 10 written expression examinations in two weeks, and the school is determined to maintain its academic schedule amid the recovery efforts.
