![]() A LACK of spaces at the country’s major tertiary institutions is the reason why many eligible students are missing out of places, Higher Education Minister Don Polye says. Polye, who is Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology as well Sports, said the selection process also did not allow capable students to have a better chance of being slotted back to their second or third choices if they did not meet criterion for school of their first choice. He said this had left many students who possessed a good enough grade point average to be in university or college to miss out entirely.
Polye said the national online selection system selected students who met all an institution’s requirements starting from applicants with the highest grade point average (GPA). He said however if most of the student applicants for the given institution scored the required GPA and all spaces were filled up, the rest who scored the required GPA would unfortunately miss out, but the system would look at their other choices. Polye said the problem was one of capacity and a bottleneck at each institution for a limited number of spaces from the thousands of graduates who passed out of the secondary school system annually. “Higher learning institutions and universities set up criteria to ensure that the students reach the highest academic confidence during their studies which results in some students with good GPA’s not being selected because of the standard and spaces,” he said. The Kandep MP said this in response to a question on Friday in Parliament by Opposition Leader Joseph Lelang on why many students with good GPA’s were still missing out on a tertiary education.
