THE Papua New Guinea International Education Agency (IEA), which owns and operates 18 schools and technical and further education (Tafe) colleges, last year had its teachers and staff undergo child protection training. The IEA subscribed to a one-year safeguarding and duty of care package for international schools EduCare. EduCare is a partner of the Council of British International Schools. This suite offers 85 hours of online accredited learning and enabled all IEA staff to keep up-to-date with the latest training in four key areas – safeguarding, well-being, compliance and health and safety. More than 650 courses were completed in a year with more than 150 IEA staff now trained in child protection.
Port Moresby International School (Pomis) deputy principal Ronan Moore said the staff valued and appreciated the opportunity to undertake the courses. “Some staff completed up to 15 different courses in the year’s subscription,” he said. “They really appreciated the access to internationally-accredited courses that awarded them a certificate for their own professional portfolios.” Moore said all Pomis teaching staff completed the child protection for international schools course as it needed teachers to be fully aware of both legal and cultural expectations. Koroboro International School deputy principal Upu Ravu said she registered all teachers, education assistants and key ancillary staff at the school. “I believe this will provide staff with expert knowledge and empower them to act and create a safer learning environment for everyone,” she said. All teaching and non-teaching staff at Kundiawa International School also completed the online courses on child protection. The courses helped the staff to identify the right steps and action to take when dealing with child protection issues.
