THE auto-suspension of teachers in the country did not affect any teacher in Jiwaka, an official says. Jiwaka education adviser Dr Charly Muke told The National that all the teachers’ resumption forms were filled and sent to Port Moresby in time. He said it was one of the achievements of the provincial education board. Dr Muke said most of the time people only talked about negative aspects and not acknowledge good things that happen. Earlier, Teaching Service Commission (TSC) chairman Samson Wangihomie said Education Minister Jimmy Uguro did not want to see any more auto-suspension of teachers from the payroll.
Wangihomie said the department and TSC had formed a committee to address the issue. He said the committee would brief the secretary and him, and “we are going to see what we are going to do”. “We will identify where the problem is and then see how we will take it on head-on, not many teachers are suspended from payroll come auto suspension. “So the committee is working on that. “We have established the committee to see that suspension of teachers is minimised.” Wangihomie said about 7,000 teachers were suspended from the payroll but the number was lowered every day because the department was reinstating them. “Some of these could have been teachers who have died and are still on payroll and have been suspended, some are retired and some may have moved to other government departments or some may not have returned to teaching,” he said. “Otherwise, the commission would like to commend the provinces for their resilience and getting all the serving teachers who have resumed to place them back on payroll.” He commended the department staff who had gone out to provinces to collect the resumption forms.
