![]() THE visit by Hungary President Katalin Novak marks a significant milestone in the relationship between the two countries, says Papua New Guinea Inter-government Relations Minister Soroi Eoe. “PNG appreciates the contribution by Hungary through the European Union that assisted PNG with its development agendas,” he said. President Novak also visited Manus yesterday to trace back the link established by Hungarian nurse and missionary Maria Molnar who served and lived among the Manus people before World War Two. She was welcomed by Speaker Job Pomat and dignitaries at Momote Airport, Manus. Novak and her delegation then proceeded to the Lugos Evangelical Headquarters where she handed over 10 computers to the Bible School. She later laid a wreath at the Mission cemetery.
They then boarded a dinghy for Pityluh island. She leaves for home today. Eoe said her visit to Manus was of personal significance given the fact that Mari Molnar was her great-great grandmother. President Novak said: “I have come to PNG to also commemorate brave Hungarian Christian woman Maria Molnar who was in PNG 100 years ago. “I know that PNG has ties with the European Union (EU) and are strengthening ties with them.” Hungary pledged 50 scholarships for PNG university students. “We will further work on the details of the scholarship programme,” she said. Novak said the scholarships would provide the opportunity for PNG students to study in Hungarian universities, contributing to the development of PNG. “We have quite a high level of education in Hungary and I know that it is very precious to give access to education to your generations because you all know that the more chance they have to be educated, that more chance given to develop your country.” Statement Also read Comments are closed.
